This file is meant to aid in the use of the groundwater flow program MODFLOW. It illustrates how to create properly formatted input files for MODFLOW and provides help on preventing and detecting some common errors. It is meant to be a supplement rather than a replacement for the original documentation. This document is designed to be useable on all platforms and with a variety of web browsers. I intend for this document to be accessed locally so that it can be used on computers without an Internet connection and can be accessed quickly. It has been tested with NETSCAPE® 1.22 (16 bit version for Microsoft Windows® ) and NCSA MOSAIC® 2.0 (for Microsoft Windows® ). It appears to display correctly on MS Internet Explorer® beta 1.5 for Windows but has not been extensively tested on it. Netscape is slightly better than Mosaic because of the way the "Back" button is implemented. In Netscape, if you move to an internal anchor within a document you can push the "Back" button to go back to your previous position within that same document. In Mosaic it will take you back to the previous document. Both browsers allow you to adjust the font in your browser to a comfortable size.

There is limited scope for originality when describing how to use someone else's software. Let it go without saying that virtually nothing in this document is new except its organization into what I hope is a more easily accessible form. The descriptions of how to use each of the packages come primarily from the documentation of the package cited at the beginning of each package. Sometimes, however, one of the later supplementary packages affects the usage of an earlier package. In such cases, I have included such information with both packages. The bibliographic citation at the beginning of each web page is only for the original documentation of that package and not for other packages that may affect its usage. If one of the later supplementary packages is mentioned in the description of an earlier package, you should be able to find the material in question in the documentation for the later package. For example, even though I do not specifically cite the documentation for Version 3 of the Block-Centered Flow Package (BCF3) in the page dealing with the Basic Package, I expect that everyone to realize that part of the discussion of IAPART in the Basic Package was originally published in the documentation for BCF3 rather than the Basic Package because I mention BCF3 by name and link to it.

The pages cited at the beginning of each web page are for the input instructions for that package. However, in the detailed descriptions of each variable, I include material from all parts of the original documentation that are relevant to that variable.
